“Keep your distance” is the mantra of governments worldwide to get the corona pandemic under control. The measures that force us to social distancing for a year and a half leave deep marks in our society. In 2020, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam gave me the honorable assignment ‘Document Netherlands’ to document these traces. Distance tells what the Netherlands looked like during corona. How healthcare workers and scientists worked behind the scenes, how public space was transformed and human contact was defined by protection, isolation and removal.
